Here we are with more of our series of blogs on audio production. In previous blogs we talked about jingles and audio production for videos. ON this blog post, we'll talk about audio production for multimedia.

audio production for multimedia

Its is once again our friend and audio producer, Mr. Alejandro Segovia, who shared this information with us on an interview. This is what he said:

Audio Production and Multimedia

"There are events that some companies do... For example, right now I am recalling the 100 years anniversary of the Chivas football club (Football club of Guadalajara). An event tat took place at the Jalisco Stadium to which many people attended. It was a huge event, in which different disciplines converged:

  • Stage design
  • Illumination design
  • Visual Effects Design
  • And of course, audio production

I was in charge of the music for this multimedia event. It was an event that lasted around 15 minutes or so, in which different groups of dancers, choreographies of all kinds, visual artists, etc., presented their act. The idea was to show all the decades that the club had lived through, until reaching the current era. It all had to be synchronized as a single event: lights, sound, video projection, mapping, everything had to be perfectly synchronized! That is what we call a multimedia show.

Another example of a multimedia event that uses what we call mapping, is what some governments and cities have been doing lately: They've been projecting videos and images in historic buildings, in public buildings, pretty amazing! Well, those kinds of events entail a whole process; they're like making and projecting a video, only that building are used as the screen where the video will be projected and the video matches the design of the building. All this is also synchronized to an audio track, to a track that has music, effects, and even, in some moments, a narration. So that synchronization is what we call multimedia.

Basically, multimedia production is very similar to producing a video; the principles of video production are the same, only that it works based on a show that will be projected outdoors or what will be projected in a in a theater. Let me explain this a little more:

Difference between video and multimedia audio production

An institutional video most likely will be played in a cinema, or on a computer screen or on television. But a multimedia show will be played outdoors (square, stadium...), se we must take great care of the audio mixing, because most likely, we won't only have a set of two front speakers, but a mix of speakers to create a whole surround system, therefore, we have to pay attention to every aspect that involve this kind of production.

Another thing that sometimes gets also synchronized with multimedia is pyrotechnics. There are certain shows where music and fireworks get linked. For example, a Disney parade or show: there's music, pyrotechnics, laser beams ... And all of it matches the music, there's a perfect synchrony in all of these elements.

Also, while in making music for a video, the time aspect is a little more open, it gives a little more leeway since we don't have to struggle for perfect synchronization, while in a multimedia show, the challenge to overcome is synchronization: music and any other visual elements must be perfectly synchronized.
