tips to write catchy headlines

If you are reading this article is because the headline got your attention. As simple as that. This is why it is key to write great titles in order to attract new customers. Plus, a good title can help you get your content ranked better for search engines such as Google.

How to Write Headlines That will Make your Visitors Fall in Love with you at First Sight?

1.- Start with a very specific draft

Your original title doesn't necessarily has to be the final one. It is just a specific title that will help you define the limits of your topic. Instead of writing "Tips for caring for your pet" start with "Tips to feed your cat better". You see the difference? The first one is too general, the second one is more precise and will allow you to write about something specific, which your readers will appreciate (they specifically looked for what you offered in the title, no less, no more).

So you should first have this title that will guide the content of your article, and then you can later work on it to make it look interesting:

2.- Make it look "handsome"

So now you know what the article will be about, time to make it look more attractive. How? There are different ways to achieve it:

  • Make it fun: "5 tips to bathe your baby and not die trying" sounds more fun than "5 tips to properly bathe your baby"
  • Make people curious about it: "Things that you didn't know about bathing your baby and all Pinterest moms are talking about"
  • Promise something: "Meet the 5 celebrities who are bathing their babies with this new method" (and fulfill it!
  • Use adjectives: "The unparalleled method to bathe babies that is rescuing the missing patience of mothers"

3.- Be specially careful with:

  • Being truthful- Inform yourself well and keep your promises. Do not make up information just to catch people with and interesting (yet fake!) title. You want to gain the confidence of your readers, not to lose it.
  • Offer a real value to your client. Your reader should be able to identify on the title, the benefit that reading your article will bring to him/her. Will it solve a problem or answer a question they may have? It ir really useful? In order to know this, you must know who your buyer persona is.
  • Keep it short. Change a long title such as: "Do you think that bathing your baby well and with patience is an impossible task? We here share 5 tips that will show you how to achieve this apparently impossible task" for "5 tips to bathe your baby and not die trying". Get to the point!
  • Use understandable vocabulary. Use words that people will understand. Making it too sophisticated won't get you more readers. If you were writing an academic article you'd probably need a specific vocabulary, but for a blog post that is trying to reach as many people as possible, an easy and understandable language is always the best way to go.
  • Use keywords. Make sure your title includes those keywords that people will be using when searching online for that answer that your article will give them.
  • Watch your spelling, grammar and punctuation. Your title is your "cover letter". Make it attractive not just by making it fun or interesting but also by caring about how well written it is.

4.- Have a brainstorming meeting every once in a while with your team

You can never have too many ideas when it comes to creative work. Try to hold regular meetings with your team in order to brainstorm ideas, both for titles as well as on topics for articles. What one doesn't think about, the other one does. Write down all the options mentioned because, however bad they may sound at the beginning, they can later be polished or they can give rise to better ideas. If you do not have a team to support you on this, lean on resources that you can find online; check how other authors have titled similar articles. Ideas are out there, you just have to find them. In other words, you can either have them yourself or you can use creatively what others have done or thought as well.

Long story short

A title that catches people's attention is important, but so is the content that follows. No matter how good your title might be, if the article itself offers no real value to the person who reads it, this person won't read more than just the first lines.

Try to optimize everything: title, headings and the article itself. It should seek to give an answer to the doubts that your buyer people might have in a truthful, concrete and direct manner. By doing so, you will gain their trust.
